What are electrons?
Electrons are the negative part of an atom. The number of electrons equals the number of protons unless specified differently. The number of protons is the atomic number. Valence electrons are the ones on the outermost shell, this can be determined by a periodic table pattern.
Quantum Model
Tells us how electrons orbit an atom
1. S Orbital
2 electrons on one single orbital
2. P Orbital
2 electrons on 3 orbitals, 6 electron spaces able to be filled
3. D Orbital
2 electrons on 5 orbitals, 10 valence electrons can fill these orbitals
4. F Orbital
2 electrons on 7 orbitals, 14 valence electrons can fill the 7 orbitals
Get out your periodic table and test your knowledge.
Resource!
You can use an Aufbaugh diagram, which tells us the order in which orbitals fill up, to complete work regarding electron configuration. Feel free to use this on all homework, tests, and quizzes.
